Services and accommodations – Types of accommodations

Virginia Commonwealth University provides accommodations and services for students with disabilities to ensure access to classes, programs, services and activities. For detailed information about the types of accommodations and services, refer to the Handbook for Students with Disabilities [pdf].

Assignment to classrooms
All VCU programs, not necessarily all classrooms, are accessible to students with disabilities. Students with mobility impairments are strongly encouraged to review their schedules at least four weeks before classes begin and contact the disability support services director.

Oral and sign language interpreters
Interpreters should be requested at least four weeks prior to the first day of class. Students should contact the disability support services director to request deaf and/or hard-of-hearing services.

Library assistance
Assistance is generally provided by designated library personnel at the reference desk. Two-days notice for special assistance is highly recommended. Periodicals, reference text or library materials can be reques12/19/2007 four disability workstations with specialized software located behind the reference desk.

Textbooks in alternative form
The Office of Student Academic Support Services and Disability Support Services provides taped, enlarged, Braille or electronic textbooks for students who have visual impairments, learning disabilities or other disabilities that significantly impact the student’s ability to read standard print. Students should request textbooks from the disability support services director at least four weeks prior to the first day of class.

Readers
Reader services are offered to students who have visual impairments, learning disabilities or other disabilities that significantly impact the students’ ability to read standard print. VCU does not provide reader services for home use.

Note takers
Students needing assistance with note taking should contact the director at least four weeks prior to the first day of class.

Physical accessibility
University administration strongly encourages students to notify the Office of Student Academic Support Services and Disability Support Services at least four weeks prior to the first day of classes to ensure classroom accessibility.

Service animals
Service animals are permitted in all university areas (there may be exceptions in health care facilities).

Parking
Use of designated parking spaces in VCU parking decks and lots at the VCU Medical Center for students with disabilities requires both a university parking permit that may be obtained from the VCU Office of Parking and Transportation, and a permit or license plate issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles or the state in which the vehicle is registered. Students should contact the parking office for more information.
